Manzanita Trees as Wedding Accessories - What’s the Story?

What Is Manzanita?

A native shrub to the Pacific Coast and inland west of North America, Manzanita trees are a common sight in gardens and landscaping where they thrive in hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. An evergreen with attractive nectar-rich flowers in spring and red berries in summer, its contorted and colourful bark really stands out.

The name is Spanish and literally translates as “little apple”. It’s thought likely it earned the name from its berries which, on the most common native varieties, do look at first glance like tiny apples. Perhaps the most famous characteristic of Manzanita is the plant’s ability to regenerate after the wildfires that are becoming increasingly common both in its native America and here in Australia. Although Manzanita can be grown from seed, in the wild it tends only to spread after fire has helped to open up the seed pods. In fact, Manzanita trees are often the first plants to reappear in devastated woodland.

Their natural resilience and the way Manzanita sheds its bark each year to reveal new, smooth growth makes Manzanita trees particularly apt and symbolic for weddings. Native Americans still consider Manzanita trees symbolic of new beginnings and rebirth.

Manzanita branches dry exceptionally well and take a long time to decay, making them a great choice for preserving and using for internal décor. The colour is well retained after drying but, on exposure to sun, the bark can fade to a dramatic silvery white. Some wholesale wedding decoration suppliers will even sandblast Manzanita branches to create a driftwood feeling. Manzanita trees can either be used to make a striking statement or add a rustic touch, depending on the feel you want for your big day.

Wedding Table Decorations

Manzanita branches are a great option for your wedding tables. Used as a wedding centrepiece, upright in a pot, they add height and drama but without restricting your view across the table. For a more informal feel, they also look great lying along the length of the table with votive candles and favours tucked around the branches.

The contortions and sprays of branches are perfect for suspending smaller decorations or lights and the choice of colours makes it simple to tie your Manzanita trees in with your overall colour scheme. If you’re making floral displays yourself, Manzanita branches add structure and form that are ideal for formal and informal arrangements.
