Seven Big DIY Money Savers For Your Gifts and Favours

A small treat placed on the table for each guest or offered to all on a platter at the end of the night has become an expected feature of most wedding parties and is believed to date back to pre-Revolutionary France.

Depending on the size of your guest list, the cost of this seemingly minor detail can soon mount up. WWS has some great ideas for ways to make favours with wow-factor for very little money.

  1. Keep it simple. Your favours don’t need to be big or expensive. Traditionally, sugared almonds were served at the end of formals as a pick-me-up to tired dancers, which is one of the places the favour tradition is thought to come from. Sugared almonds can be bought in bulk in an array of colours and are still a firm wedding favour favourite.
  2. Pretty Packaging. A tray of favours can double up as a decorative display if you consider it one of your wedding accessories. Create simple fabric bags or pouches yourself, using squares or circles of fabric gathered together with co-coordinating ribbon or string. Tulle is a great option here, as it is easy to work with, light and available in a huge choice of colours.
  3. Make Your Own Sweets. Sugared almonds might be beyond most home cooks, but toffee, fudge, truffles and nut brittles are all easy to make at home, keep well and can be presented in bite-size morsels. Look for recipes online and bulk buy petit-four cases or cellophane to separate your sweet treat from the bag.
  4. Jam Tomorrow. Miniature preserve jars and bottles look gorgeous, especially if you have a rustic wedding theme. A few hours spent making jam, cordial or chutney can translate to scores of miniature gifts for guests. Use luggage tags and bakers twine to label one for each guest.
  5. Cute and Smart. If you are no domestic whizz, there are some great and quirky ready-made favour options that are a little different. Italian delis often stock delicious amaretti biscuits wrapped in delicate paper. These are pretty enough to offer as favours in their own right and affordable when bought in bulk. Or why not offer guests wrapped fortune cookies or lollipops?
  6. Boxing Clever. For a smart and neat look, cute favour boxes are easy to assemble and can be bought very affordably in bulk. You are not just restricted to neat little cubes; favour boxes come in all sorts of styles, shades and shapes.
  7. Paper packets. Imagine you run your own sweetie shop with these cute paper lolly bags. They are available in just about every shade, pattern and colour you can think of, so why not give your guests a pick-and-mix favour option? These have a great retro, vintage charm and are really affordable.
