However non-traditional the chosen venue, the traditions of an aisle to walk down and a focal point for the exchange vows are key to many people’s vision of a proper wedding. So how can you create a ceremony space where there is no existing structure in place for weddings?
Elegant Aisles
You’ll want to give the bride the opportunity to walk to the groom, allow for the wow factor in the first glimpse of the dress, and emphasise the dignity of the slow walk towards her future. This requires some smart planning if the wedding is going to take place in an informal setting. Literally rolling out the red carpet can be a simple solution: use fabric to create a runner or aisle. Fabric paint can be used to incorporate a wedding motif, monograms or the date. Choosing a bold colour will help to draw the eyes of the guests.
If a physical aisle is impractical, mark out your runway by including visual signals at the side of the aisle and the end of rows of chairs. If all else fails, scattering silk flowers or silk petals along the runway looks romantic and relaxed and works in almost any setting.

Once the bride has made it down the aisle, the next consideration is a romantic backdrop for the exchange of vows. For some ceremonies, it’s a simple matter of erecting a Chupah, Mandap or other canopy, but where those options are unsuitable, a simple curtain of luxurious fabric can provide a suitable backdrop. DIY wedding decorations can really come into their own when framing the happy couple for the exchange of vows. Suspended origami cranes, silk flowers or candles can create a light and romantic frame.
