The perfect table linens will definitely add elegance and style to any tabletop. But do you know how to hang your table linen on the table? Or what goes on top of it? Your beautiful wholesale table linens aren’t going to look their best if you haven’t taken the care to make sure that everything else does too. Here’s how to set a table properly.

Start with the actual tablecloth. The rule is that the longer the table linen, the more formal the event. So if you’re having a very formal event and are using things like wedding table linen, make sure that the tablecloths fall right to the floor, without actually touching it and without it ever making a puddle on the floor beneath the table. White tablecloths are also usually preferred for formal events but this isn’t absolutely necessary. The only real rule when it comes to the color of your table linen is that it shouldn’t have any patterns that clash.

When setting the table, one dinner plate should first be placed squarely in front of each chair. Then, a linen dinner napkin should be folded neatly and laid in the center of each plate. The next thing, and the area where people usually get the most hung up about, is setting the cutlery out properly. There are a few, very easy rules to remember that will never leave you wondering about fork tines or soup spoons again.

The first thing to remember is that only forks go on the left, and spoons and knives go on the right. Forks should be placed with the first fork to be used set at the outermost point. Then, working the way in, subsequent forks can be placed in the order in which they’ll be used. On the right side of the plate, place the knife closest to the plate. Then, place any spoons next to the knife, placing them the same way that you did the forks – with the first spoon used being at the outermost of the plate. The only exception here is the dessert spoon, which is placed at the top of the plate.

Once your table linens and cutlery are all set, the only other thing you need to put out are the glasses. Glasses are placed at the top of the plate, to the right, and in the following order: water glass, red wine glass, white wine glass, and the champagne flute. Once the glasses are in place, you can step back and admire your beautifully set table!
