A Formal Wedding Place Setting

Start With the China

Your reception dinner’s number of courses—soup or salad, starter course, main course, wedding cake, et cetera—will determine the number of actual dishes you’ll need, so talk to your caterer about the china layout. When it comes to the china, it’s hard to go wrong with crystal or white china, but you’ll want to tie it all together with charger plates in your decor colour scheme.

Flatware and Glassware

The flatware and glassware you choose will need to be as simple or as ornate as your china. Water glasses and champagne glasses are standard, but additional glassware may be necessary, depending on the number of courses you serve. The same goes for your flatware—the pieces you’ll need will depend upon the type of dinner you’re serving your guests. Again, this is something your caterer can help you with, but you’ll want to coordinate your flatware and glassware choices with your table decorations, so plan to work together.

Napkins

Napkins are a huge part of a wedding table setting, and you can go as personalised or as standard as you wish when you choose your wedding reception napkins. Whether you do the classic white napkin accented with a napkin ring or opt for printed paper napkins, or beautifully folded napkins that can act as a decorative feature, make sure you remember your theme so that everything looks coordinated.

Table Decorations

Now we’re getting to the fun part! From centrepieces to candle holders and votives, table scatters to place cards, and floral arrangements to wedding favours, the table decorations are where you get to bring your wedding’s theme into the place settings. Some people choose to decorate each place setting using votive candles, small bouquets or other individualised decorations, while others go more formal and concentrate on floral centrepieces, candelabras and other more central decorations. The choice is yours, but choose one—you don’t want your reception tables to be so crowded that guests have a hard time eating and talking!
